Elected senate would replace House of Lords under Labour

Elected senate would replace House of Lords under Labour

He will tell a conference in Blackpool on Saturday the current system "fails to represent large parts of the UK".

Senators would be elected from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English regions instead of from constituencies like MPs.

This will give the senate a "clearly defined different role", Labour says.

Mr Miliband is expected to say: "We're going to reverse a century of centralisation and make sure that £30bn of resources is devolved to the city and country regions that need it.(1)

Wow, an elected UK upper house on the table once more!

Scottish Labour leadership: 'Political wake-up call'

Scottish Labour leadership: 'Political wake-up call'

Fellow MSP and leadership contender Sarah Boyack said: "That's why we've got to focus on reconnecting with people, reconnecting with those Labour voters who voted with us in the past but voted 'Yes' in the referendum."(1)

No offence, but what about a change in policies? Scotland isn't Right-wing

BBC has Right-wing bias

Contrary to the UK Right's complaints, the BBC does NOT have a Left-wing bias. Rather it has a Right-wing bias as Cardiff University has found after a review;

Israel Suppressed Press on Kidnappings

In past decades, restrictions on the news media gave security officials in Israel a free hand to pursue their objectives under the cover of an information blackout. Now, with access to social media and activist blogging, that is no longer possible, and a vigorous, at times frightening, public discussion of the killings has continued online based on rumor and leaks used by partisans of both sides to indict their enemies.
In the case of the three Jewish students who went missing last month near Hebron as they hitchhiked home from school, Israel’s Shin Bet security service barred reporters from telling the public that gunshots were heard on the furtive emergency call made by one of the kidnapped teenagers. The Israeli journalist and commentator Noam Sheizaf argued that keeping salient facts of the investigation secret for weeks allowed a government-backedsocial-media campaign to channel outrage over the abductions to grow, but also set the public up for crushing disappointment once the bodies were discovered.
“In schools across the country, including one near my home, signs were hung with the teens’ names and slogans like, ‘looking forward to your return,’ ” Mr. Sheizaf wrote on his blog. “If the teachers knew about the blood in thecar, the bullet holes and the sound of gunshots, would they have let their young students paint those signs or have their photos taken with them and posted on the Internet?”
Another Israeli journalist, Raviv Drucker, suggested that concealing facts from the public might have built support for the military operation in the West Bank against Hamas operatives during the search for the teenagers, but also created an atmosphere of blood lust, and open calls for violent revenge, in the days before a Palestinian boy in East Jerusalem was abducted and burned to death.
“That doesn’t mean that the search for the boys should have been halted, but perhaps there would have been fewer mass prayer vigils and empty speeches predicated on the belief that the boys were still alive,” Mr. Drucker wrote. “And perhaps there would have been less pressure from the public for a heavy handed response from our decision makers. Perhaps, too, the wave of ugly incitement would have been a bit smaller.”
The absence of verified information about the missing Israelis initially led some Palestinians to speculate that “no abduction had ever occurred,”according to Amira Hass, a correspondent for Haaretz. The widespread assumption that the boys might be found alive, fostered by statements from Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations and other officials, also fueled speculation that the boys might have been abducted as bargaining chips to win the release of Palestinian political prisoners.(1)

Richard Seymour on national identity and the Right

Worthy talk here, by Richard Seymour, on the 'national identity' stuff and the exploitation by the Right. The centre-left has a lot of recent blame too, which Richard covers as well.

Independence of Speaker Bronwyn Bishop again compromised

Independence of Speaker Bronwyn Bishop again compromised after she takes direction from Christopher Pyne

The independence of the Speaker has again been compromised after the government was caught directing her to bring applause for Bill Shorten's budget reply speech to an end.
A video circulated on Thursday night by Labor showed the manager of government business Christopher Pyne explicitly directing Speaker Bronwyn Bishop to rise to her feet, which is the parliamentary signal for members to fall silent.
It's the second time in less than a week that Mr Pyne has embarrassed the government, after first being caught on tape delivering an insult to the Opposition Leader which some interpreted as a four-letter profanity, but which the government insisted was the word "grub".(1)

One of the first things the ALP needs to do when next in government is elect a new Speaker, esp. if this biased one is still there.

Question on Ehud Yarri article

"The road not taken by Kerry, a transition agreement, would have led the U.S. to seek a broad understanding between the parties that would temporarily bypass the insoluble core issues yet allow for the speedy establishment of a Palestinian state over 70 percent to 90 percent of the West Bank. Such a transition agreement would allow Israel and the Palestinians to dramatically change the political landscape while temporarily setting aside the most difficult issues that have prevented an agreement for the past 20 years that have elapsed since the signing of the Oslo Accords."(1)

While retaining the most important portion in eastern Jerusalem & Greater Jerusalem of the major settlement blocks?

That's hardly reasonable. Nor unreasonable to reject.

If The US State of New York is to secede from the US, but the US retain New York City, that'd plunge the new nation-state of New York into recession.

The same would be likely for a Palestinian state without the most important portion.

I have never been served a birthday cake on my birthdays without the icing layer, that'd be absurd. But unfortunately the Israeli governments wants the cake and to eat it too!

Lord Norton on SSM Act passage

One of the most notable features of the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act last year was the large majority it achieved in the House of Lords.  It received a Second Reading by 390 votes to 148, with every grouping in the House – Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and cross-benchers – producing a majority in support of the measure.  The scale of support, especially on the Conservative side, was greater than that in the House of Commons.

Why the large majority?  Such an outcome would have been unthinkable twenty years ago.  As Michael McManus points out in his book Tory Pride and Prejudice, there was little support in the Lords for lowering the age of consent or getting rid of Section 28, especially on the Conservative benches.  Those of us on the Conservative side arguing in support of change were in a tiny minority. AFGHANISTAN: 13 YEARS ON

AFGHANISTAN: 13 YEARS ON

Over a decade since the US invaded Afghanistan, what is the result?
With Afghan elections ongoing this week I find myself wondering, what has a 13 year occupation brought about? During the 19th century Afghanistan was at the centre of Russian and British rivalry in Asia, part of the so called ‘Great Game‘. Then during the Cold War of the 20th century, a Soviet occupation turned it once again into a key battleground for global dominance. What about in the 21st?(1)

Guardian on NSA stuff

Guardian News & Media said:

The loss of classified data was not the responsibility of journalists but of the intelligence community itself. It is only the involvement of global newspapers that prevented this information from spilling out across the web and genuinely causing a catastrophic leak.

We have consulted regularly with the DA-notice committee, Downing Street, the White House and the intelligence agencies, giving them time to raise concerns and flag up anxieties. We have listened carefully to the arguments made to us, agreed not to publish certain things, and redacted all names and sensitive operational details.

That said, we understand that some people will always warn that any form of disclosure has a damaging impact on the work of the security services – but this cannot mean the end of all questioning and debate.(1)

Though I might post this, given recent Snowden revelations
